Evidence-Based Therapy Approaches for Children and Adolescents

At CBT Denver, our expert child and adolescent therapists are here to help you find a tailored, research-backed therapy approach based on their age and the things they might be struggling with.

Every child and teen deserves support that meets them where they are. We provide caring, evidence-based counseling services. Our goal is to help young people build skills, manage emotions, and face tough life events with confidence.

We provide a safe, supportive environment and an individualized approach to help your child with mental health challenges. We work to help them manage stress related to their age and surroundings—like school, low self-esteem, and anxiety.

We take a strengths based approach focused on helping kids and teens build on what’s already working, while giving them tools to handle what’s hard. Our team has extensive experience working with children and providing adolescent counseling in Denver across a wide range of emotional, behavioral, and social challenges.

We offer a variety of evidence-based psychotherapies for children and adolescents and our specialties include:

  • Life transitions such as divorce, sibling issues, or moving

  • Suicidal thoughts and self-harm

  • School violence

  • Behavior problems

  • Impulse control

  • Substance abuse

  • Gaming, social media or other screen addiction

Child and Teen Therapy Approaches

The primary modalities we use are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). These approaches help kids, tweens and teens to build a toolbox of skills.

Under the guidance of our expert clinicians, they will learn to use these skills to regulate their emotions, communicate effectively, and build a sense of competence at school and in relationships. This, in turn, will motivate them to work towards goals and values which builds a growth mindset and self-compassion.

Given the sensitive age and circumstances adolescents find themselves in, one-on-one talk therapy often provides a better setting for open communication. They may feel more prone to discuss feelings of anxiety, life transitions, substance use, and stress factors freely and without the added pressure of a parent present. These individual sessions form the core of our counseling for teens.

Parent Skills Training, Coaching and Education

Parent Skills Training and Education

We help parents become skilled and confident through evidence-based cognitive-behavioral skills training. Parents learn coping strategies and skills that work to reduce anxiety, oppositionality, non-compliance, impulsivity, tantrums, and emotion dysregulation. Parents can also learn how to reinforce desired behaviors to support their child’s health.

For older children and teens participating in individual therapy, Parent Coaching and Parenting Education sessions may augment individual therapy so that parents can learn strategies and approaches to support their child’s growth and emotional health. Parent sessions are part of all Adolescent DBT Skills groups as well. In these workshops, parents learn the basic DBT skills so they can support their teens in using the skills.

Family Therapy

Depending on the age and needs of the child or adolescent, family contextual factors and the particular family situation, parents and children might be encouraged to engage in Family Therapy together. This is a holistic approach that focuses on building skills, learning communication skills, managing independence, and navigating conflict successfully.
